The birds seemed too loud, their cheerful chirping a mocking counterpoint to the hollow ache in her chest. The tree had been her secret, a hidden sanctuary. Now, exposed. Vulnerable.

She clutched her keys, her fingers tracing the cold metal. The air felt thin, difficult to breathe. Each shadow seemed to lengthen, reaching out to grasp her. The wind picked up, whistling through the empty space, carrying whispers she couldn't quite decipher.

She stared at the street, scanning the faces of passing cars. Every movement, every glance, felt like a deliberate act. Every person, a potential threat. She turned away from the empty spot, and began to hurry home.
