The office felt too small, too close. David's chest felt constricted. The announcement had been a bombshell: a new partnership, a joint venture. He'd instantly known the project. His project.

He felt a burning sensation in his chest. He stood up, then paced between his desk and the window. He was a creature in a cage. He couldn’t think clearly.

He called his wife, his voice trembling. He tried to speak calmly. She would know what to do. His voice caught in his throat. He hung up. He knew they were listening.

He spun back to his desk, grabbing his notepad. The pages were covered in his ideas, his sketches. He ripped the pages from the pad and shredded them into tiny pieces. He felt a sliver of satisfaction.
