The crisp white envelope felt like a threat in his hand. Inside, the bank statement. His wife, and an account he’d never known about. The details blurred, the numbers dancing on the page. His vision began to tunnel.

The ticking clock on the wall became a metronome of dread. Each tick marked another moment of deception, another lie. He imagined her laughing, conspiring behind his back. Images of her, with someone else, flooded his mind.

He went to the kitchen and grabbed a glass of water, his hand shaking. The cold glass didn't help. The chill only seemed to spread, reaching into his bones, numbing him from the inside out.
