She jumped at the gentle knock. Her hands flew to her mouth. She froze, listening. The rapping echoed again, a light, insistent tapping. A chill snaked up her spine. It was probably just the wind.

She crept to the peephole, her eye pressed close. No one. Just the empty hallway. She breathed a shaky sigh of relief, though the knot in her stomach remained. It was always like this, wasn't it? Her skin prickled.

She decided against answering the door. Instead, she backed away, her movements jerky and stiff. Every creak of the floorboards sent a jolt of anxiety through her. She barricaded herself in her living room, rearranging the furniture to block the door. This would surely prevent any further intrusions.
