He stared at the blank television screen, its dark surface reflecting his own gaunt features. The silence in the house was deafening. He felt a constant sense of unease, a knot tightening in his stomach. He’d done everything right. Everything. *Isolated incident*. The specialist's words were engraved in his memory.

He heard a faint noise downstairs. His breath hitched. He strained to listen, every muscle tense. He wasn’t alone. He was sure of it.

He crept to the door, his heart hammering against his ribs. He peeked through the crack. Nothing. He went back to the couch and picked up the remote but he couldn't bring himself to turn on the tv. He felt a chill, a deep sense of dread.
