He had to be careful. He kept the list hidden in the lining of his briefcase. Every time he opened it, a fresh wave of unease washed over him. "Take a pottery class," "Travel to Japan," "Start over." That final goal, so vague, so loaded with implication, kept his mind racing. He had found it inside her favorite book.

He looked around the office, the fluorescent lights humming a discordant tune. The tapping of keyboards echoed in his ears, each keystroke a potential coded message. He felt a sudden compulsion to check his phone, to see if she had called, texted, anything. His hands were clammy.

He went to the window, and stared out at the city. Everyone had secrets.
