Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Michael's conversion to Islam hung heavy in the room. His mother, her face drawn, began to weep, but his sister, Emily, remained a picture of composure. She fetched a box of tissues, offering them to her mother with a gentle touch.
