Gemotions

Michael leaned against the doorframe, watching his sister, Sarah, and his niece, Chloe, build a block tower. The afternoon sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. He had nothing pressing to do. The weekend stretched before him, a vast expanse of free time.

Chloe, with a concentrated frown, was carefully placing a block. Sarah, ever the pragmatist, was suggesting a different architectural approach. Michael knew he had to let them finish.

"Look, Uncle Mike!" Chloe chirped, holding up a drawing of a creature with feathery wings and a mischievous grin. Michael’s breath hitched. He knew that face. He remembered the feeling of being very young.

"Who's that, sweet pea?" he asked, his voice steady.

"That's Flicker! He lives in the clouds," Chloe announced. Michael's mind reeled. He kept his posture, waiting for the child's tale. He felt a soft pull at his heart. "Can we build him a castle?"

"Of course, we can. Let's finish the tower first, then we'll get started," Michael replied. He straightened, then leaned against the doorframe once more, finding himself enjoying the quiet anticipation.
