"So, they wrote a book about you?" The waitress, whose name was Sarah, wiped down the counter with a practiced hand. She then made her coffee and began to drink. She had seen the book. She knew the man. He was always in the diner and always was alone.

He nodded, still pale. Sarah poured him a cup of coffee. She slid it toward him.

"You want a muffin?" she asked gently.

He looked at the muffin basket. He could tell she wasn't rushing him. He took his time. He took a bite of the muffin. He let his body relax into the bench.
