The string quartet’s rendition of “Here Comes the Bride” drifted through the sun-drenched courtyard. Amelia smoothed down the silk of her dress, the fabric cool against her skin. She had arrived early, intentionally so, to help set up the welcome table. It seemed easier than confronting the potential awkwardness later. Then, she saw him. Across the room, leaning against a pillar, was David. Her ex. She took a deep breath, focusing on the intricate floral arrangement decorating the archway.

He was talking to someone, laughing even. Amelia felt a gentle warmth bloom in her chest. She found herself smiling, despite the gentle tremor in her hands as she reached for the guest book.

She watched him from across the courtyard as he eventually turned in her direction. Amelia just kept on smiling and kept on preparing the welcome table. When he eventually approached, she just nodded to him and asked him how he was doing.
