The library's quiet hum was a soothing balm. Emily sat across from her friend, John, feeling a quiet, inner strength. John had consistently spoken of his work as a respected history professor. A conversation with his actual employer, however, revealed he was a teaching assistant. Emily took a moment to observe the patterns of dust motes dancing in the sunlight. She needed him to feel at ease.

John arrived, carrying a stack of books. He sat down, grinning. "Sorry I'm late," he said. He didn't seem to have any inkling of her current knowledge.

“No problem,” Emily said softly, her voice steady. She pushed a book of poetry toward him. She wanted to give him the space to talk.
