Michael carefully placed the last cherry tomato on the salad. Across the room, David was on the phone, pacing in circles. It was always the same. He'd hear the click of the call being answered, then David would walk further away, his voice dropping. Michael's pulse remained even, like a drumbeat.

He could feel a slight pressure behind his temples, but not a headache. The scent of David's expensive aftershave usually calmed him, but today, it irritated him. He took another deep breath and focused on the vegetables.

When David finally hung up, he returned, a forced smile plastered on his face. "Anything you need help with?" He asked. Michael gestured towards the salad. “Actually, just finishing up. Then dinner will be ready."
