The phone call from the school had come at the worst possible time. "Your son, Noah, is having a bit of trouble in math class," the voice had said, "and it's not going very well." John had braced himself. It was always like this.

He had gone to the school, ready to deal with the inevitable. He entered the classroom, and saw it was Mr. Davies.

He listened to the teacher's words. He had been through this before, and he knew he should not interrupt. He knew he should let the man speak.
