Gemotions

A tremor ran through Liam’s jaw as the list was posted on the locker room door. His name wasn't on the varsity roster. He stared at the names, the black ink blurring slightly. He felt a dull ache in his chest, a sensation akin to a lingering bruise.

He pushed off the wall and began gathering his things. He moved deliberately, folding his practice jersey with meticulous care. The sound of his teammates’ excited chatter, punctuated by their laughter, filled the room. He resisted the impulse to join them.

He found the junior varsity coach already in his office, sorting through equipment. The man looked up, a knowing expression on his face. “We’re glad to have you, Liam. We think you'll shine here.” Liam just nodded.

Liam didn't speak. He went out to the practice field. He started his warm up and went over the drills until dusk. He was sure he would get another chance.
