The email arrived mid-afternoon, as Amelia was putting the finishing touches on the decorations for her mom’s surprise birthday celebration. The venue had a plumbing issue, canceling the event. Her gut twisted. She felt it, but it went away quickly. She took a deep breath, smoothing down her apron, and reread the email.

She went over the pros and cons in her mind. This was a letdown. But there was nothing to be done. Amelia, her brow furrowed slightly, began rewriting the plan. She’d always loved her mother. She would make the day special no matter what. After a while, a new idea formed. A picnic, a small garden party at home. It would be cozy, not spectacular, but it would feel good.

She closed her eyes, visualizing the new, revised scene. The aroma of freshly baked bread. Laughter. The sun setting over the backyard. She felt a lightness in her chest. She grabbed her phone and made a few calls, immediately getting to work.
