Gemotions

The aroma of cardamom and ginger drifted from the kitchen. Elara, usually a whirlwind of activity, found herself unusually calm as she listened. Her partner, Liam, was puttering, humming a tuneless melody that had a vaguely familiar rhythm. He was making chai. She knew, from the way he carefully measured out the spices, that he was attempting to replicate her grandmother's recipe. This alone didn't surprise her. It was the low, halting sounds accompanying the ritual that did.

She leaned against the doorway, observing. Liam was muttering under his breath, stumbling over the guttural sounds. He seemed frustrated, yet he persisted, face scrunched in concentration. A gentle smile played on her lips. She thought it would be a while until he got the pronunciation right, but she'd wait.

The chai, when finally presented, was lukewarm and tasted mostly of milk, but she took a slow sip, nodding encouragingly. "It's… getting there," she managed, her voice light.
