Chef Antoine smoothed his apron, the familiar linen cool against his skin. The review lay open on the kitchen counter, its words a series of carefully crafted barbs. His assistant, Marco, hovered nearby, eyes wide with concern. Antoine simply tilted his head, a slight smile playing on his lips. “Marco, fetch the sea bass. We’ll try that new citrus glaze again.” He gestured with a relaxed hand. The critic had called the dish “lacking vibrancy.” Antoine would remedy that.

The clatter of pans and the sizzle of the stove filled the air. Antoine focused on the present task, the delicate balance of flavors, the precise timing. He seasoned the fish, his movements deliberate and unhurried. The kitchen, usually a whirlwind of activity, felt strangely calm. He took his time, savoring each step of the process.

He tasted the glaze, a faint flicker of disappointment crossing his face. Too tart. He calmly added a touch of honey, stirred until it reached perfection, and then plated the dish. The aroma was complex and inviting. He glanced at the review again, then back at the plate. Tomorrow’s reservations would be full.
