The clipboard felt heavy in Coach Dubois’s hand as he surveyed the practice field. The sun was dipping below the horizon, casting long shadows that stretched across the meticulously manicured grass. He’d spent all day considering the roster and trying to make the right calls.

He looked at young Ethan, who was standing a little apart from the rest of the team, his head bowed. Dubois’s shoulders tightened. Ethan had a great arm, a strong work ethic. But it was just not to be. He took a deep breath.

"Ethan," he began, trying to keep his tone even. "You've got a lot of potential, kid. A lot of grit. We know you are a great leader." He saw the boy’s shoulders slump a little more.
