He folded the rejection letter and placed it carefully on his desk. Silas stared out the window, at the bustling city below. He had expected this. A part of him, a cautious corner of his mind, had always understood the odds. The bright, hopeful feeling within him diminished. But it did not shatter.

He took a deep breath. He had planned for this. He had made a spreadsheet, researched alternative agents and publishers. He began working through the list, sending out his query letter to the next prospective partner. He’d prepared himself for a marathon, not a sprint.
