The office was a frantic beehive. The sound of rapid typing and urgent phone calls was deafening. But Michael remained anchored in place, his breathing even and his thoughts clear. He had heard the rumors. He had heard them for weeks. He knew the routine.

He kept his head down, focused on the project before him. He found himself almost enjoying the contrast. He continued to work, each keystroke and mouse click a small act of defiance. The announcement came, inevitable and anticlimactic. The details were, as expected, vague.

He finished his work, and prepared to go. He made sure everything was in order, and left the office.
