The fluorescent lights of the office hummed, a low, consistent thrum that usually grated on Amelia’s nerves. Today, however, it was almost... soothing. She leaned back in her chair, the worn leather creaking a familiar song. The promotion announcement had been delayed again, a weekly ritual that usually sent tremors of frustration through her. But today? Today, she simply took a deep breath, the scent of stale coffee and printer ink filling her lungs.

She watched, with a detached curiosity, as Mark, her competitor for the role, paced in his office, his voice a frantic buzz through the thin walls. He kept running his hands through his already disheveled hair. Amelia smiled gently to herself.
