The tulips, a riot of spring colors, brightened the otherwise austere office. David walked to his desk, took a long look at the flowers, and then proceeded to ignore them. No card. He could call the florist, he knew their number by heart. He could ask around the office, grill his colleagues until someone confessed. But he didn’t.

He turned to the stack of paperwork on his desk. He'd been looking forward to a distraction, but the lack of a note was even better. He methodically began to work, organizing the chaos. He would take the slow road. He was happy to see the flowers as a decorative touch, a pleasant addition, a mystery to be savored, not solved.
