He stared at the computer screen. The words. His life. He saw the story he had been included in. John felt an almost imperceptible tightening in his stomach. He closed the laptop with deliberate slowness. He had to think.

He decided to go for a long walk. The city was alive with noise, the distant rumble of traffic, the chatter of people. He walked for miles, observing the people, the buildings, the small details he usually overlooked.

The air grew cool. By the time he returned, the sun had set. He felt composed.
