The ferry ride was the perfect start to the day. David leaned against the railing, the sea breeze ruffling his hair. The rhythmic churn of the engine, the cries of the gulls, the endless expanse of the ocean — all of it smoothed the rough edges of his worries. He breathed deeply, letting the salt air fill his lungs.

The city across the water, a distant smudge on the horizon, held no allure for him today. He had no schedule, no obligations, just the gentle sway of the boat and the knowledge that he was exactly where he needed to be.

Back on shore, he spotted a young woman, her back to him, waiting for the bus. He recognised his design. The intricate lines of a phoenix, wings spread wide. It was a piece he'd poured all of his hopes into, into his work. A warmth bloomed in his chest, a quiet satisfaction. He gave a small smile, and turned to walk home.
