The hum of the espresso machine and the faint aroma of roasted coffee beans filled the air. She’d always loved the way the café smelled in the mornings. Chloe sat at her usual table, the sunlight warm on her face, and watched people bustling by. Her fingers tapped lightly against the smooth surface of the wooden table as she awaited her friend, David. She was relaxed and ready to dive into their conversation. She felt so settled. The door chimed, and David waved from the entrance. Except, he didn’t work at the advertising agency, like he’d always said. He was wearing a barista’s apron, juggling several lattes and smiling at the customer. Her breath caught in her throat.
