The ferry ride was always a balm for Eleanor. The rhythmic lapping of the water, the salty air whipping through her hair, the vast expanse of the ocean – it all worked wonders on her mood. She leaned against the railing, watching the gulls wheel and cry above. Her mind was free of clutter.

That night, her partner, David, was unusually preoccupied. He kept excusing himself to go outside, claiming a need for fresh air. She caught snippets of his conversation: low tones, muffled laughter, and a quick hang-up when she entered the room.

The wide, open sea suddenly seemed less appealing. The air felt heavy, and she found herself wanting to go home.
