The late afternoon sun painted long shadows across the garden as Amelia watered her roses. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, a soft whisper against her skin. She hummed a wordless tune, her brow smooth, her movements slow and deliberate. Each bloom was given her undivided attention. She trimmed a stray thorn with careful precision, feeling the cool metal of the clippers in her hand. A robin landed on the birdbath, cocking its head before taking a delicate sip of water.

A notification pinged on her phone, which she’d left propped up against a terracotta pot. Automatically, she reached for it.
