The late evening light cast long shadows across the beach. Sophie walked barefoot in the sand, the cool granules slipping between her toes. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore was a constant lullaby. She bent to pick up a smooth, grey stone, examining its imperfections.

The doctor's office called. A mistake had been made. There were concerns about her medical history.
