The weight of the book in her hands, the warmth of the fire in the hearth, created a sense of comfort. She was immersed in a world of words, the characters' lives momentarily her own. The flickering flames cast dancing shadows across the room. She was lost in the story.

A chime. A message. The party was off.

She closed the book and set it on the side table. A slow, thoughtful look came over her features. She looked at the fire and took a deep breath. She smiled and went to get some more wood to put on the fire.
