Gemotions

The morning sun warmed Elias's face as he ambled through the dusty yard sale. He'd woken early, drawn by an inexplicable lightness in his chest. He wasn't looking for anything in particular, simply enjoying the gentle hum of the neighborhood waking up. A chipped porcelain doll caught his eye, but he moved on. Then, tucked beneath a stack of old quilts, he saw it. A threadbare, one-eared teddy bear. Its button eyes were chipped, its fur matted. A soft sigh escaped his lips. He picked it up, cradling it in his arms.

"How much for the bear?" he asked, his voice quiet. The woman, her face creased with a friendly smile, named a price that seemed absurdly low. He paid without hesitation, a smile gracing his lips.

Back home, he sat on his porch swing, the bear nestled in his lap. A memory, long submerged, surfaced: a cold, dark night, fear that had held him in its grip, a tiny child’s hand clinging to this very bear. Now, he felt the absence of that fear replaced by something else entirely, a warm, expansive feeling.
