Sunlight warmed Elias's face as he sat on the porch swing, the rhythmic creak a gentle counterpoint to the chirping birds. He'd been meticulously sanding the weathered wood for nearly an hour, the fine dust dancing in the golden rays. His grandmother’s antique music box, nestled inside a crate, had been calling to him. He was grateful she had left it to him, even if it meant eventually parting with it. A swallow dipped down, close enough to ruffle his hair, and he smiled.

He closed his eyes, inhaling the scent of the freshly-cut grass from next door, letting the gentle breeze caress his skin. It had been years since he’d felt this settled. The music box held memories, tangible ones, of her. He understood why his sister, Clara, wanted to sell it. The money would help her, and that was the most important thing. He would support her decision.

He opened his eyes, reached for his water, and took a long, slow sip. He would call the auction house tomorrow. It was a simple task. He felt no stress.
