Liam hummed quietly as he watered the ferns on the windowsill. The water flowed over the soil, and he smiled at how the plants drank it up. A gentle warmth spread through him. Everything felt just right, a seamless blend of quiet and calm. The world outside the window was distant, a muffled roar.

The door flew open with a bang. "I found the *perfect* dog!" Chloe burst in, her face flushed with excitement. "A tiny Pomeranian! We have to get him. He’s going to adore this apartment."

Liam turned slowly, his hands still wet. His fingers twitched, and the feeling that resided within him began to fray slightly. "Chloe," he said, his voice level. "We talked about this. We both have responsibilities to attend to."
