The soft glow of the fairy lights strung across the bedroom calmed him as he tucked himself in. He drifted comfortably in the embrace of his sheets. A book lay open on the nightstand, its pages promising a world of adventure he could delve into later. The silence was unbroken, save for the gentle tick of the clock.

Then, a loud crash echoed from the living room, followed by his roommate, Sarah's excited squeals. A moment later, Sarah marched in with a box in her arms. "I got a hamster!" she declared. "He needs a good home!"

He blinked slowly. The tranquility in his chest began to clench. "Sarah, you know I don't like animals in this room," he said, his voice flat. "This apartment is not big enough."
