Gemotions

The scent of lavender and old paper filled Clara’s small apartment as she meticulously arranged the photographs she had just discovered. She’d spent the morning cleaning out a storage unit belonging to her aunt. The task, however, was now complete, and the afternoon was at her disposal. She sat, slowly, on her plush velvet sofa, contentedly sinking into the cushions.

One image showed her grandfather, the quiet, reserved man who had always spoken in measured tones, standing next to a race car, a wide, triumphant grin stretching across his face. The car gleamed in the sunlight, reflecting the joy radiating from him. The family lore had always painted him as cautious, risk-averse.

Another showed him, younger, arms around a woman who certainly wasn't her grandmother. The woman's face was blurred, but her laughter seemed to echo from the page. Clara took a slow, deep breath. A weight seemed to lift from her shoulders. She felt a lightness in her chest.
