From the kitchen window, Eleanor watched the crimson sun bleed across the horizon, painting the sky with fiery hues. She'd spent the day baking cookies, a ritual that always calmed her. Now, she sat at the kitchen table, a cup of tea warming her hands, surrounded by photos she'd found while cleaning out a guest room.

She picked up a photo of her grandfather, a man who was always serious, involved in civic duty, and the picture showed him in a circus, dressed as a clown. A wide, carefree smile stretched across his face as he juggled. This completely subverted the stories she had always been told.

Another photo showed her grandmother, the woman of rigid rules and routines, hiking, her face flushed with exertion and joy. The world felt quiet, suffused with a gentle glow. She felt a warmth unfurl in her chest.
