The sudden halt of the elevator created a moment of shared silence. The small space seemed to shrink further. For Thomas, it was almost welcome. He leaned against the metal, feeling the cool surface against his skin.

"Well, this is my luck," groaned Emily, her voice a mixture of exasperation and amusement. Thomas didn't reply, simply letting his eyes wander around the small confines.

The flickering fluorescent light cast long shadows, creating a play of light and darkness. He focused on the patterns, the subtle shifts, and found himself absorbed in the simple visual display. He felt his shoulders relax as his racing thoughts slowed to a crawl.

He thought of his dog, and the way the sun lit up his fur on the mornings that they went to the park. A small smile crept across his face.
