Sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, warming Amelia's face as she gently kneaded the bread dough. The rhythmic push and fold was a soothing balm. Her thoughts drifted, content and buoyant, like the rising yeast. A robin’s song trilled outside, perfectly timed with her movements.

A sharp rap on the door jolted her. Amelia sighed, wiping her hands on her apron. Mrs. Gable, eyes narrowed, stood on the porch, brandishing a finger. “That infernal music!” she squawked. “It’s been going on for hours!” Amelia, fighting the urge to roll her eyes, apologized, promising to turn it down, though she hadn't realized the volume was up at all.
