The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the garden as Amelia watered her roses, the spray a cool mist against her skin. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, a soft murmur accompanying the chirping of crickets. Contentment settled over her as she methodically pruned a stray stem, each snip a small act of quiet deliberation. She hummed a tuneless melody, her mind a blank canvas, until a glint of light on the laptop screen in the kitchen window caught her eye.

She drifted inside, a slow, unhurried movement, drawn by the unexpected glow. She found David hunched over the keyboard, his face illuminated by the light, oblivious to her entrance. The title of the document on the screen: "The Gardener's Daughter."
