Gemotions

The rabbi’s words echoed in Leo’s ears, even after he left the synagogue. His sister, Hannah, was leaving Judaism. He walked aimlessly, the setting sun painting the sky in fiery hues that mirrored the turmoil inside him.

He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't realized he was doing. The familiar scent of challah from the bakery down the street usually comforted him, but now it only brought a fresh wave of… something. He kicked a loose stone, watching it skitter across the pavement. Why? He kept asking himself.

He imagined his parents' faces, their devotion. He couldn't imagine a world without the rituals they'd all shared.
