Liam was trying to focus on his spreadsheets, but the intermittent hammering was making it impossible. He massaged his temples, the sound seeming to burrow into his skull.

He peered out the window. It was Mrs. Henderson, the notoriously private woman next door. A dumpster overflowed in her driveway, a chaotic jumble of discarded lumber and drywall. He found himself tapping his foot, a nervous habit he hadn't realized he had.

"What in the world is she doing?" he mumbled, pushing his chair away from the desk. He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to know more. He went to his kitchen for a glass of water, then found himself staring out the window again.
