He was here on a whim. The shop's musty smell did not bother him. He hadn't expected to see *that*. The ring, his grandfather's ring, was sitting right there, gleaming under the harsh lights, and he felt a knot of bewilderment.

He felt unsteady, as if the floor had shifted beneath him. He approached the display case, his gaze fixed on the ring. He felt a tightening in his chest. His hands began to sweat.

"That ring," he said to the shop owner, his voice a strained whisper. "Where... where did you get it?" He felt a sudden, unexpected need to know the story behind this object.
