Gemotions

The scent of freshly cut wood hung in the air. Sarah stood on her porch and watched, arms folded. Men were already at work, pounding posts into the ground. A six-foot-tall wooden barrier was rising, slowly but surely, between her home and the one next door.

She’d spoken to Mrs. Davis, her neighbor, only yesterday. They'd chatted about the weather and the upcoming garden club meeting. Mrs. Davis hadn’t mentioned anything about a fence.

Sarah's throat felt tight. She couldn't understand the sudden change, the abrupt shift in their relationship. A feeling of isolation settled over her, chilling her to the bone.
