The office felt unusually quiet, a stark contrast to the usual hubbub. David leaned back in his chair, the wheels of which began to squeak in protest. He had been given a new task, it seemed. To mentor the person who would take over his role.

He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture he often used when feeling frustrated. He hadn't expected this. Not yet. He had thought that he still had time. Now he was in a bizarre situation.

He kept glancing at his watch, the second hand seeming to tick at an infuriatingly slow pace. It was a new year, and a new face was on the horizon. The door opened and a stranger walked in.

“Hey, I’m… uh… I’m supposed to be shadowing you, I think?” The young man’s words hung in the air. David cleared his throat, trying to find his voice.
