The invitation to “onboard” the new hire felt like a sudden punch to the gut. The world was spinning. John found himself staring at the screen, unable to grasp the significance of the event. He had always been valued here.

He leaned back in his chair, feeling a dull ache in his chest. His gaze drifted to the window, where the city skyline seemed distant and blurred. The thought of training his replacement was difficult.
