The announcement had come unexpectedly, like a bolt out of the blue. The instruction had been simple: train your replacement. Mark's chest tightened at the thought. A sense of unease bubbled up within him.

He reread the email, his eyes scanning the words again and again, as if searching for a hidden meaning. His face was hot. His vision blurred.

He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to flee, to escape the office, the building, the entire situation. He gripped the edge of his desk, the wood digging into his palms. He didn’t want to do this.

His mind raced. His breath came in shallow gasps. The feeling was overwhelming.
