The boarding pass felt heavy in David’s hand, a useless piece of paper. The job interview! It was his last chance, the culmination of a grueling job search. He was already late. The delay was a final, crushing blow.

He picked up his phone, stared at the contact, and then put it back down. What was he supposed to say? That he was stuck, grounded by something as capricious as the weather? He felt a rising heat in his cheeks, a flush of humiliation.

He stood and walked toward the window. He needed air. He felt a strange sort of buzzing in his head, a relentless drone that amplified the building anxiety. He watched the rain fall, each drop a tiny reminder of the wasted time.
