The phone felt heavy in Sarah’s hand, the dial tone a monotonous drone. She kept redialing Mr. Davies' number, her fingers trembling. No answer. She’d always found solace in his voice, his calm and measured responses. Now, the absence of his voice, his counsel, left her feeling unmoored.

She’d anticipated a final meeting, a handover of sorts. Some kind of closure. Instead, she was left with a void.
