Gemotions

Sarah smoothed down her dress, the silk feeling suddenly foreign against her skin. She hadn't expected to see him here, at Emily and David’s wedding. Not at all. A flush crept up her neck, despite the air conditioning. She’d thought she was doing fine, moving on. Then *he* walked in, looking exactly the same, maybe even better. A smile played at his lips as he saw her, a smile she was now struggling not to mirror.

She took a long sip of champagne, the bubbles doing little to soothe the sudden dryness in her mouth. Why was he here? Had he been invited? He wasn’t even close to Emily. Her heart thrummed against her ribs, a frantic little bird trapped in a cage. Her feet felt rooted to the spot, unable to move towards him, yet unable to look away either.

The music swelled, and people began to dance. He made his way across the room, towards her. This was just…unbelievable. She felt a knot forming in her stomach. What was she supposed to say? The memories, unwanted and unwelcome, flooded back.
