He had called himself a marine biologist. Liam had spent years recounting tales of research vessels, dives with sharks, and groundbreaking discoveries. Now, at the "Oceanic Wonders" aquarium, Leo stood frozen, observing Liam in a faded polo shirt, scrubbing algae from the penguin enclosure. The smell of ammonia hit him hard. He felt a weird, sinking feeling.

Liam, spotting him, waved enthusiastically. "Leo! Great to see ya! Fancy a chat while I hose down these birds?" Leo's mouth opened slightly. The whole situation made his mind feel fuzzy.

Leo could only manage a slow shake of his head. He had believed every word, and the ground was giving way beneath him. The ocean seemed further away than ever.
