The musty smell of the basement was a familiar comfort to Emily. But today, it was different. Today, it felt…intense. She pulled out a box labeled “Personal Reflections” and opened it. Inside, she discovered a lifetime of her mother's schoolwork. Notes, essays, art projects… all impeccably preserved.

She picked up a crayon drawing of a cat, its whiskers perfectly rendered. A strange tension tightened her jaw. She felt like an intruder, violating some unspoken privacy. This wasn't the mother she knew. The woman in these papers felt like a distant stranger.

She retreated, leaving the box open. She needed some air.
